In my late forties I became a Samaritan and through listening I began to understand better the lives of others. I became more aware of how life’s experiences affect us all. Inevitably I also began to examine my own life in more detail, the things that affected me and the things that troubled me. A colleague suggested that I try therapy to explore these feelings. I was wary, apprehensive and a little sceptical: I didn’t feel there was anything I could do about the situation I was in.

The reality of my own therapy was entirely contrary to my expectations. I embarked upon a journey that has proven to be worthwhile, enlightening and ultimately freeing. No one waved a magic wand and made everything suddenly better, but through the therapeutic process I was able to gain a better understanding of myself, my feelings and where I sat in my surroundings. It was at times hard work, sometimes funny and always revealing. The world hasn’t changed and everything that goes with that still happens, however my world view has changed, together with my sense of self and my ability to handle troubling events. Ultimately this has resulted in my life being happier.
